Take it Back

Work has been brutal this week and for some reason my head is not in the game. I feel like I am struggling to keep up and then add on the late night mentor sessions – I am feeling a bit like a fish out of water. Luckily, my morning runs have been soothing to the soul.

Lack of time means my brain is scattered and lack of ‘me’ time. Never a good mix. The weekend will be a big relief despite the root canal pain I may have to deal with. So I am going back to the basics, thanks to Khushboo’s inspiration. Kind of crazy that I still have more to share with  you all?

  • I  use the same fork, spoon and plate each night despite having others of the exact same kind. I just tend to grab what is on top, which is the one I just washed aka the one I used the night before.
  • I am a creature of habit. I tend to develop these little routines for the most mundane tasks – like the order of things I do right when I walk in the door from work.Pinned Image
  • I save the coffee that I don’t take with me to work in a nalgene in my fridge for iced coffees later.
  • I call my mom daily and have done that since college.
  • I take showers that are five minutes or less. For some reason showers are always quick in my book even if I could take more time. I shower because I have to, not because I like to. I swear people, I am not that gross of a person.
  • I have not worn jeans in four years. I don’t own a pair to this day.
  • I have a bad habit of beating myself up – not literally of course. I get frustrated that I don’t strength train, that I compare myself to others, that I feel guilty for things I shouldn’t. The ‘you are your own worst enemy’ is kind of true.
  • I always put salsa on my salads. Along with dressing but salsa too. I love me some spice!
  • If I was a boy, my dad wanted to name me his middle name – Assad. I would have been tortured on the playground for sure.
  • I lived in the same house my whole life and my parents still live there today.
  • I don’t wear makeup. I swear I’m a girl.
  • My feet are embarassing thanks to the years on pointe shoes for ballet and now running. I rarely show them off.Pinned Image
  • I have only had one boyfriend and that was for a few months in college.
  • I have BIG feet for only being 5’5. I wear a size 10 running shoe.
  • I am very particular about textures – probably why I hate nuts, nut butters, avocado, bananas yet love cottage cheese, jello and tapioca. Strange girl right here.
  • Many foods I ate during my ED years I can’t even look at today. I still have very strong memories around certain foods – it is hard to explain but even seeing them sends my mind to a memory.
  • I tend to like books that are more odd than sentimental. Same with movies, the creepier the better. Some of my favorites include Chasing Redbird and the Perks of being a Wallflower. I am loving Thirteen Reasons Why – flying through this one!
  • I still have a lot of nerve touch problems that I always believed egg-ed on my ED.
  • I am stubborn as ever. Almost competing with my sarcasm.Pinned Image

Hopefully no one has run away. Tackle your Thursday people!

Questions: Tell me one thing about you that people may not know. These always brighten my day!

  1. 1. Omg I think showers are annoying and are so quick too. I just hate having to dry off and whatever lol
    2. I’m 5’5 and wear a size 9 !
    3. I’m the same about textures. Bananas = yuck but mixed in smoothies are okay to me

We are so the same :)

    • I have to agree, I don’t mind the flavor of banana but the texture of actually eating one makes me avoid them at all costs. i can’t remember the last time I have actually eaten one! Been almost 15 years. Whoa, i thought you were way taller than me!

  2. It’s scary how much we have in common — I actually made a list of it! I use the same fork/bowl/plate/spoon too, and don’t use the dishwasher because I like the same ones so I wash them by hand. All about the short showers, I’ll take 6 min if I need to shave, but otherwise 3-5 for sure. Cheers to no make-up!! (Which isn’t correlated to the being the same on the no-BF front — totally there too). LOVED the pinterest quote. bahaha. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do that! I’ve always lived on the same street, but in two separate houses less than 20 houses apart. I also have nerve damage from ED/rowing — fingers and toes, have trouble eating ED foods (or even smelling them), and also all about the texture (just the thought of chomping on mushrooms makes me cringe).

People may not know that I fake it til I make it — trying to convince myself that things are better/ that I’m happier than they really are/ than I really am. In the end, I usually get there, but it can be a bit of a let down sometimes when I realize that I’m pretty much lying to myself.

    • Hilarious! Same deal with mushrooms, they really make me gag if I don’t cook them right. that and fake sweeteners, yuck. I don’t use my dishwasher either, it has remained untouched since I have moved in. My phrase that I used throughout my terrible years was ‘I’m fine’ kind of similar to your fake it till you make it mentality. I had to break down that wall and learn that hiding from others was only hurting myself.

  3. OMG I agree with so many of these! Definitely a creature of habit, love salsa on salads, I take record time showers, and I HATE wearing jeans too!

  4. Nice post! I also have ugly feet from pointe! My feet are really small though, I can wear kids shoes! My husband is always threatening to by me Dora the Explorer shoes!

  5. If I would have been a boy, I would have gotten my dad’s first name and been a Junior… All I can say is thank goodness things turned out the way they did. And a big YES to salsa on salads. Seriously, I’m so addicted to that stuff that I can (and do) eat it straight from the jar with a spoon. No shame.

  6. If I were a boy I would have been Brian Richard – ummm,,,pretty glad that didn’t happen.

I have the same house situation – my parents moved there 26 years ago and are still there today. Means that it will always feel very much like home to me!

  7. I totally feel you on the shower thing, I do it out of necessity and I’m in and out as fast as possible!

  8. I used to think I had the ugliest feet, until one day I realized that yoga was healing them. I think they will continue to improve.

If I was a boy, my dad wanted to name me Elvis Einstein. I’m not even kidding.

I also don’t wear makeup and I loved “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower”. I really related to Charlie. Other books I love are “Snowcrash” by Neal Stephenson, “Invisible Monsters” by Chuck Palahniuk, “Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling and “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engel.

My parents didn’t have cable television when I was growing up and I don’t have it now or have any intention of getting it.

    I grew up in Alaska.

I’ve never had a long term best friend girlfriend.

I did running start in highschool.

I could go on! I hope your day rocks today, Alex!

    • I love all of these! You grew up in Alaska, how freaking cool. I am going to check out those books, I have only read a few of them of course harry potter and loved a wrinkle in time. I have never had a long term girlfriend either. Love the name, Elvis all the way.

  9. I seriously feel like you just described my life. I don’t wear makeup (who can be bothered), I hate my feet, I only eat foods with good textures though mine is the opposite foods to you haha and I definitely call my mum every day. I would die without her :)

  10. Haha glad you were inspired to write your own version- always fun to learn more about a blogger! Another random fact about me: I work in denim yet only owned my first pair of jeans when I was 16!

  11. Haha you seriously crack me up! I hate black coffee. No matter how bad sugar and cream is for you, I can’t drink it black.

    • Who knows why but I like coffee black, I mean i drink it other ways but i can handle it black. My big cheap Alex move is to take the miniature creamers from gas stations – not buy the coffee just take the creamers for my own coffee.

  12. Truth- when I read the first line of this post I imagined I had a basketball in hand with Zac Efron dancing alongside me singing “getcha getcha getcha getcha head in the game”. Yes, High School Musical came out when I was a sophomore in college and yes, I can sing every word. Have a great day!

  13. Alex, we have some much in common! I’m definitely a creature of routine, and I’m all about storing coffee in a pitcher in the fridge so I can make iced later. I also call my mom every single day, which I’ve done since college. (Well, except when I studied abroad, but then I Skyped her at least once a week.) Hope you have great day! :)

    • We are so similar! I remember the first time I found your blog and started reading I was like whoa! However, I must admit i have no self control with grapes and eat them all before they even make it to the freezer. haha

  14. I too call my mom daily and have since college, take the world’s fastest showers, and my parents still live in the same house that is the only one I ever lived in! I really want to get 13 Reasons Why, but it’s on hold :(

  15. Haha, oh my god, seriously, every time you post I realize we are closer and closer to being the same person. I can’t remember the last time I’ve put on makeup or stood in a shower for more than five minutes–I just don’t like showers! Although yeah, I realize they are (unfortunately) necessary. And I was going to be named my dad’s middle name–Garrett–which I still think is the ugliest-sounding name ever. (And by the way, screw that guilt and comparison–it’s all about what YOU like to do!)

    • Ya, no offense to your dad but having that as a first name would not be the easiest. I do the same with your posts, plus your wit is right up my alley. A no makeup lover too! Now that makes my day

      • Hah, I was trying to explain that to my parents once, and I think they got offended that I was judging their taste in names. Still..that’s a pretty awful one. And I just don’t understand makeup! I mean, it’s fun on special occasions, but on a daily basis? So much work to make your face feel uncomfortable.

      • Agreed a lot of work to just take it off again. I swear I am a girl. Haha

  16. um we are the same person. My showers are never longer then 5 minutes and I can’t understand people who take long showers, I get bored and cold! I just started 13 reasons why and so far I dig it, I am totally into books like that; depressing books are my thing which is not always a good thing because my job can be depressing, but things like that interest me!

    • haha, what is your job again? seriously the book just keeps getting better and better. I struggle to put it down. i am so into it. long showers just get boring, I am always thinking what else I can or should be doing.

  17. I am the same way. I use the exact same silverware every single day. Seriously why do I even have all that other stuff LOL. I have to motivate myself to take a shower at night. I get so lazy sometimes and the rush around in the morning before work LOL.

    • It is true, I don’t care if I smell I just hate showering sometimes. I actually bought no new silverware and plates when I moved because I knew this would happen. My creature of habit ways just kicked right up

  18. Alex, I love you and I love this random post. I have some great foot helper tips from my years of being stuck in point shoes, but then again I was really lucky and blessed with strangely durable feet. I really want to read Perks of Being a Wallflower! I am however a very long showerer. My water bill is not a fan…

  19. haha I don’t remember the last time I wore jeans LOL that’s too funny.. working all week it’s like the last think you want to wear come the weekends

  20. I have MAJOR texture issues too. Like I love greek yogurt but the thought of pudding makes me want to yack. Seriously, it just makes me cringe. Same with pumpkin pie, the texture of pumpkin pie is something I just can’t stomach. I have no idea why. And I wear size 10 running shoes too and I’m 5’4″ :)

  21. haha love this post! Something about me people may not know- I am allergic to penicillin. Sorry that is not very exciting…LOL

I have texture issues too! I can’t stand the way GU gels taste…always have to have my gummies for running fuel.

  22. I hateeee jeans. I only wore them to work, and even then I hated them. They got so baggy on me that people worried I was sick and not eating. HA. I also don’t wear makeup most of the time. On a rare occasion I will splash some mascara on, but that’s it. Mainly because I don’t know how to use it.

I get extremely anxious when things are cluttered..like bat shit cray goes on inside my body.

    • I hate clutter too, my apartment is always clean. Just keeps me at peace. I literally just despise the feeling of jeans, when I first started wearing them in middle school it was because I was basically forced to by my parents. Yuck.

  23. I’m the same with showers, I do it out of neccessity – hate having to get in and do all that and then freeze afterward.
I feel the same toward certain foods because of my ED years. I won’t eat them. Trying to explain this to my boyfriend can be challenging some days.
I too do not wear makeup – waste of money and I’m quite fabulous without ;)

My thursday is going well :) Keep rocking on.

  24. Oh man, I wish I didn’t like showering haha. I could get so much more done in my day! I think my biggest issue with showers is that I almost always take them right after I worked out, so I’m either blazing hot (summer) or freezing cold (winter), and standing in a cool/hot shower is the best feeling everrrrr.

When I was a kid I hated jeans, but now it’s pretty much all I wear. With the exception of working out or Sundays (church), I basically wear exclusively jeans. You’d think I’d have a stronger aversion to wearing jeans given the fact that literally zero of my pairs fit me in a flattering way, but I’ve basically accepted that attempting to look decent is a completely lost cause for me…like today I looked in the mirror at my attempt to create a decent outfit (a flop, like always), said to myself, “Well, I’m sure this isn’t the worst fashion crime I’ve ever committed,” and decided to go with it. Haha. I’m too cheap to be fashionable.

  25. I’m the total opposite of you texture wise with those foods! Hand over the peanut butter and banana, but jello? Ick! I hate the way it jiggles down my throat. Perks of being a wallflower was one of my favorite books in high school, I haven’t decided if I wanna check out the movie yet.

    • I am in the same boat, I fear the movie will not live up to it. Actually I am pretty sure it won’t be able to, that book was just too good.

      • aftertheivyleague

I agree! And I don’t really see how it would translate to a movie? I haven’t read the book in awhile, but it was so much about being in the character’s head. I can’t see that translating to the movies too well.

      • Exactly and that is what made the book so captivating was this in your head type feel. I may just have to see it to bash it – yep true life

  26. Keeping your leftover coffee in the fridge for iced coffee is a great idea! I always just throw mine out

  27. Girl, you are me and I am you. Seriously. Nothing else to say.

  28. I actually wear like a size 6 shoe and can never find shoes. In dressy shoes I wear a 5 or 5.5! But I’m pretty tiny so that’s why. I also save my leftover coffee in the fridge like you do occasionally.

I don’t wear makeup either and wore jeans for the second time in about 4 months on Tuesday since it was chilly. I don’t foresee myself wearing jeans much at all now that I work at my home.

  29. ok, so I love bananas, long showers, almond better and jeans, BUT I used to hate jeans, love running, have other texture issues, and have to do things in a certain order when I get home too, so I think we can still be friends ;)

  30. My parents live in the same house I grew up in too! So crazy! And I can’t believe you don’t wear jeans!

  31. I have like 20 pairs of jeans! What do you wear on the bottom?

  32. My feet are jacked up from dance too!! I lose toenails still all the time!

  33. Ooo I’ll have to check out some of those books! I am the same way about odd books. No jeans – say whatttt? What do you usually wear?

And hec yes salsa on salads! Spice up your life :-)

  34. First, I have NO idea how you have time to blog and have a crazy work schedule. Kudos lady!!!

Second, WOWZIEEE size 10 shoes? My sister wears that size too. It just means you have been balance ;-)

  35. mmmm – I LOVE iced coffee. saving the extra from the morning, is such a great idea – I’m going to try this tomorrow! I also take super fast showers, mine are about 5 minutes if that too! People think I’m crazy, but I just don’t understand how they could last any longer??
I call my parents every single day too – so you aren’t alone!

  36. I think we are the same person. I’m the same way with plates, forks, spoons, etc. I just use the same ones! Haha I’m also with you on the showers. I hate them. I have huge feet, and like you, I have the same little routines that I go through the moment I get home.
Looking through the comments, it’s crazy how many people have all of these things in common!

  37. Love this post!! So honest and fun. I have only had one real serious boyfriend who I am currently dating!!

  38. Alex, I love this! what a great list. sorry to hear work is so stressful–in a month I’ll be starting the really busy time at work too. what helps me get through is to use any free time I have to do something calming and pleasurable, whether it’s going home for a brief nap or sneaking out to my car to read a book for a little while. those small “me time” moments help keep me grounded when things get stressful!

as for something people would never guess about me…? Until I began teaching 5 years ago, I was a hardcore “scene” kid. studded belts, pink streaks, rocker clothes, and even a lip piercing! once I started teaching I fell into my newer identity–and indie-acoustic-loving, dress-loving young woman. but I still rock out to some of my old favorite tunes every now nad then! :)

  39. Love this post. I think part of the reason I love it is because (some of) these are things I’d never think of :) Also, it is fun to know other peoples’ quirks :)

  40. I do the same thing with salsa/salad and leftover coffee.

    I’m hard on myself too…I wish I wasn’t, but I am.

  41. You look amazing for not wearing make-up girlie :) I am a slacker at wearing make-up sometimes. I usually always wear it to work but sometimes I’m just not feeling it. Also, I hate jeans too. I wear them for work, but if I had the choice, I’d probably live in yogas/sweatpants/dresses. And I have big feet too. I am 5’9, but even before I was that tall, I always had big feet. Nothin’ wrong with that ;)

  42. I bet your ancestors are Dutch ;) …. sarcasm was invented here ;) During my stay in the States I was shocked how often I got misinterpreted because of my sarcasm :p haha

  43. um I would just use the same utensils and plates too … since I would most likely not put them up after washing them. haha how do you not own jeans?! it’s what I wear pretty much ALWAYS! you don’t need make up and I’m jealous you were a ballerina … I always wanted to be one. :( I use to pretend I was one when no one was looking.
