Day In the Life

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback on yesterday’s post. It really means a lot to know I have readers out there that get where I am coming from.

I don’t think I have actually ever done one of these. With work, I have to say it is pretty routine and simple. I know come August when things pick up, my work week will be crazy. But that awesome thing about having a job is, your weekends are yours! No project, exams or work looming.

5:45 AM Wake up naturally, My alarm is set for 630 but I have not once needed it to go off. Due to the heat, I don’t mind waking up this early to run. If I didn’t I would melt (can you believe the heat we are getting, 100 on Friday!)

6 AM Head out the door for a run. Loving the morning runs because unlike anywhere I have ever lived at the time, there are tons of people out. Some going to work, some walking, some running, just all around a lively place for this early. I have found several running routes and am so lucky I live in an area where there are plenty of places to go. I can go towards Chevy Chase or down by Dupont.

7:25 AM Get back to the apartment to shower and get ready for work. My roommate leaves about this time so she is heading out the door. Kind of a perfect arrangement because neither of us are jostling for the shower.

7:45 AM On my computer with a cup of coffee in hand reading blogs, catching up on comments and posting a new post. The next hour is great decompressing time for me. I just blog, sip and read. Love it.

9 AM: Head out the door for the 10 minute walk to the metro. We live in between stops but I really don’t mind the walk. Well, I should say the walk there is fine but the walk back is all uphill. At this time, there are tons of people on their way to work, barely anyone running just because it is already so dang hot by this point!

9:15-10 AM: Metro travel. I get on the red line and then switch to the orange/blue line to get to work. Usually I have to stand for the first half of the trip (~15 minutes) and then get to sit for the last stretch when I switch lines. At my stop, the metro car is much more bare. Once off the metro, it is literally a two minute walk to my office. (One thing about the DC Metro that blows my mind are the size of the escalators, they are soooo long! I have never seen ones these lengths!) Sorry lady for catching your feet and a guy’s butt, my bad.

10 AM- 5 PM: I am at the office. Right now I am in a little makeshift desk because they are still transitioning out the girl whose place I am taking. The computer I use is slow as ever. Right now, I am mostly making documents to organize for next years students. I am learning the new computer system BUILD uses as well as starting the recruitment for mentors which I am solely responsible for.

5 PM – 6PM: Another metro trip back. Sometimes I stop two stops before mine because they have a library if I want any books or dvds. Sadly, the libraries I have found don’t have any of the books I want. Either way, the walk, although uphill, is nice. (I say that as the temperatures are said to reach 100 by Friday, insane!)

6PM-9PM: Blog, dinner, catch up and get ready for tomorrow. I seriously jam pack these three hours to fly through all my to-do lists I have. I have been loving having a kitchen and an OVEN (!) so I have been roasting away. I still lack creativity but I am trying to buy more on sale produce even if I haven’t heard of it to give it a shot. I mean it’s on sale so why not! It keeps each week a little different with choices. The funny part is, my roommate hates vegetables, even the smell of them. Oh boy she hates when I cook, it is hilarious, because it is always full of some sort of vegetable. On the flip side, she lives off of peanut butter which I hate the smell of. A pair made in heaven! We joke about it – but no joke she got an air freshener for the smell!

9 – 9:30 PM: Yes, I try to be in bed between 9 and 9:30. I know this won’t last long once we have a tv because a lot of the shows I watch are later. At this point, no tv, no entertainment, I am ready for the lights out.

During the week, this has been a pretty reliable and consistent schedule. Just like at school, my body tends to settle into a routine quickly.

Questions: What are some must do’s in your day? What is your favorite time of the day? Any questions you have for me, ask away. I hope to do a post that answers them all!

  1. My decompression times are between 6:30-7 am after I workout and before I get ready for work and right after work. I think my favorite time of the day is the end of the workday when I get to see my dog :)

  2. Wow, what a busy schedule you have. I can’t believe you wake up naturally that early! I still really wish that I could be a runner. Every time I try it I feel really discouraged and want to throw in the towel.

My favorite and also least favorite time of the day happens to be the evening. It’s when I’m most likely to freak out about something but it’s also when I make myself unwind, read mantras and affirmations, and spend time practicing self-love. I also just love watching Angie sleep or playing with her and rubbing her belly. Now we have a staircase in the apartment and her favorite thing is to run up and down it while chasing her pink ball.

    Have a great day Alex!

  3. I love these kinds of posts. I’m so nosy :p

  4. Nice routine you’ve got going there!! I can’t believe you hate the smell of peanut butter LOL!

  5. Every morning when I get to work I always get a cup of tea and just sit at my desk and read the news or a few blogs and just relax before I jump into the day. I do envy the fact that you can head out for a run early especially if you can beat the heat (or at least some of the heat). It was so hot yesterday I ended up waiting until like 8PM before heading out on my bike and it was still crazy hot!

  6. BUILD’s a great organization!! I have a few friends who have done volunteer work with them. My favorite time of day is the early morning, I’m not stressed out yet and feel all positive about the upcoming day.

  7. I love routine :) I hate how hot it is right now haha

  8. I wish I could get up early like you do! My problem is that if I went to bed that early, I’d almost never see my boyfriend because he comes home pretty late. Running in the morning is so much better though. I’m so jealous you get to run in DC – I didn’t run when I was in college and lived there and now I regret it!

  9. I see a lot of similarities in our schedule except you wake up a bit earlier and your commutes sound so tiring! I know the DC metro is quite easy to maneuver, especially since I visited DC and figured it out way quickly unlike the NYC or Boston transit systems, but still! sounds way tiring and makes me grateful that I hop in a car to go to work. Though ideally, I’d walk there! I get in bed around the same time as you too. I love that 6-9pm period where you’re just relaxing, having dinner, and getting ready for the next day. It soothes me.

  10. You’ve got a nice routine! I never need an alarm clock to wake up either! I’m so jealous you are in D.C. I visited their last month and want to go back ASAP!

  11. Wow, busy lady, you! I think you have a great routine though and a plan for getting things done!

  12. I love routines, I would go crazy without one. My boyfriend can attest to how anxious I get when my routine is messed with though!

  13. Your day looks very similar to mine but in reverse. I sleep until my alarm wakes me up, head to work, then do the workout/blog thing after work. I just can’t wake up earlier than necessary to workout I totally wish I could!

  14. What a day!! I get up naturally at 530 as well. It doesnt bother me, its just what my body does!!

  15. I also wake up naturally that early… Usually even a bit earlier,at 5:00 :P It’s okay for me,anyhoo – this way,I have more time to savor the day! :)
A must-do is a quick yoga session in the morning, and a shower! I can’t start my day without these two, seriosuly.

  16. Love it! I loved commuting on the Metro when I was in D.C. It’s such a great way to get around town!

  17. I always have good intentions of getting in bed before midnight… but I fail miserably. I also don’t wake up until 730a. :)

  18. What a schedule! But it seems pretty structured and I thrive off of structure. So this is my kind of schedule :)

  19. I almost always have the alarm set or 5;00-5:30, but my workouts don’t usually start until 6:00. Sometimes I’ll run before that, but my gym doesn’t open until then!

  20. wow! you’re so lucky you don’t have to be in the office till 10! when I worked at a health clinic, I had to be there by 7:30am…yikes. However, I did get off at 4:00pm, which was great for beating rush hour traffic and having some extra time in the evenings.

  21. ahh I love having that time in the morning to just chill out, sip coffee, and read blogs or whatever! I have to have my coffee first thing, like I am nonfunctional without it (i know, i know…), so I always start off my day with coffee + blogs. ANd YES to being up early! I naturally wake up around 6:30 too, and it only makes sense to go run!

  22. I love reading “A Day in the Life” posts – it’s always fun to get a peek at someone’s routines! My favorite time of day is morning. I love having that time to myself to relax!

  23. Love this! I can’t wake up at 5:45 to save my life… and my evening is just getting started at 9! Wow girl!

  24. I also take a ton of time in the morning… that is “me” time and I love taking forever to make and eat breakfast in front of the computer and read blogs!

  25. Morning is definitely my favorite time! Once I get up I just chill out, read, nurse my coffee, eat breakfast, watch a dvr’d show, blog…etc. I type of my posts the night before, shhh, so I just re-check everything and hit the publish button! :) I love this post Alex!

  26. Hahaha, I was definitely talking about the giant escalators this morning to my grandparents. They are huuuuuge! I love morning too, but sometimes I have this bug to GET THINGS DONE which ruins the relaxing. Eek!

  27. I have such an early bedtime too…but I still can’t drag myself out of bed that early. I like morning runs…when they happen around 7!

  28. you must be asleep already. haha but geebus! you wake up early! I am a night owl so I’m kinda afraid once work starts. You are so lucky you don’t have to be in til 10am AND you only work for 7 hours!! Wish I could have your job! haha

  29. Whoa! That sounds a lot like my sleeping schedule! I wake up at 5 every morning, and no, I don’t need an alarm clock. My body runs on its own internal clock..no batteries required. I LOVE my mornings!! I’m the most productive during this time!! I go to bed anytime between 9 and 10. Tonight’s an exception =). I must say, You are a one busy lady!

  30. Ooohh… my free time is always the LAST thing of the day… right now. I like how you have it first in the morning. It’s like paying yourself first… haha.

  31. I love this day-in-the-life post! Our days sounds really similiar! Morning runs are the best and evenings are always where I jam pack all my to-dos! :)

  32. My 7:45 hour sounds a bit the same as yours. It’s such a perfect down time before my day really starts!
